PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Quality Control Specialist is a joint member of the company’s QC, HACCP, and roasting team responsible for actively supporting company’s quality assurance program. The position includes maintaining 49th Parallel Roasters quality requirements and procedures.
In addition, the Quality Control Specialist will assist in keeping the Acumatica roasting/production part of ERP system (Acumatica) functioning, operate green bean/roasting software Cropster, as well as take care of green bean logistics and internal communication.
Quality Control (Daily Tasks)
- Set up, attend, and close out daily production cupping sessions to assess and monitor quality and help maintaining roasting profiles for different products. Record the results in Cropster.
- Set up, attend, and close out offer/arrival/evaluation cupping sessions as needed. Record in Cropster.
- Perform daily brewing and use refractometer to calculate extraction. Create brewing recipes when required.
- Perform daily espresso tests and record desirable parameters, suggest roasting profile changes as needed.
- Keep QC and espresso room exceptionally clean together with all the equipment functioning as per manufacturer’s specs.
- Assist with materials and programs that will improve overall coffee culture and knowledge for internal and external customers.
- Core team member of the Food Safety & HACCP Team.
- Create and maintain all QC SOPs.
Acumatica & Green Bean Administration (Daily Tasks)
- Perform physical examination of incoming green samples, measure moisture % and aw, record in Cropster.
- Frequently check accuracy of greens location
- Enter new greens as contracts get uploaded to the server and communicate between departments for release, use, and payments.
- Use Cropster in addition to Acumatica to keep communication between 2 software’s accurate and current.
- Perform physical examination of incoming green samples, measure moisture % and aw, record in Cropster.
- Release inventory from Coffee importers according to KPIs.
- Complete daily Acumatica tasks.
- CCP Verifications.
Roaster Assistant (Back up & As Required)
- Organize, label and portion green beans in batch size.
- Monitor physical quality of green beans and packaging and report irregularities.
- Inventory maintenance and counting as required.
- Take weight out, color measurement (Agtron) and sample roasts.
Roasting (Daily Back-up & As Required)
- Production roasting to cover roasters lunches/sick days/peak seasons and other times as required for operations.
- Operate multi-function roast machine(s) via Cropster Intelligence
- Follow product recipes and implement minor changes as per Master Roaster’s advice when needed.
- Schedule daily roasting using Acumatica and push to Cropster as per Master Roaster’s direction and / or guidance.
- Record production information (quantity, weights, types, recipe profiles, quality, etc.)
- Manage daily green bean replenishment for staging purposes.
- Daily, weekly & monthly inventory management of raw material (green coffee beans)
- Daily cleaning and maintenance of all processing/roasting machines and work area
- Consistently record and maintain quality of green bean to final cup following specific guidelines.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- 3 years+ of experience in specialty coffee
- Passionate about coffee
- Deep knowledge of specialty coffee, coffee trends and café operations
- Ability/openness to develop or have existing coffee tasting and evaluating skills
- Ability/openness to develop barista skills (home or pro) with solid understanding of technique, principles and theory
- Ability/openness to develop basic knowledge of roasting and physical properties of roasted coffee
- Attention to detail, able to present digestible information effectively
- Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively to achieve results
- Interest and desire to work in the specialty coffee industry
- Strong MS Office skills in Excel, Power Point, and Word
- Ability to build strong internal working relationships and be an effective communicator

- Have ability to see a project through from beginning to end while demonstrating the ability to both multi-task effectively and prioritize tasks
