AltaGas - Director, Indigenous and Community Relations
Reporting to Sr Director, External Affairs & Indigenous Relations, the Director of Indigenous and Community Relations, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the enterprise with a focus on the midstream division. Your primary responsibility will be to assist the business in cultivating and maintaining positive and productive external relationships with First Nations and community stakeholders. By leveraging your expertise in Indigenous and community relations, you will contribute to the company's commitment to social responsibility and sustainable business practices.
You will:
Develop and implement a comprehensive Indigenous and community relations strategy, aligning it with the company's goals and values.
Serve as the primary liaison between AltaGas and external stakeholders, including government agencies, First Nations, local communities, and other relevant organizations.
Build and nurture relationships with key stakeholders, fostering open communication and collaboration.
Act as a trusted advisor to the company's leadership team, providing guidance on matters related to Indigenous and community relations.
Support the midstream division in identifying and assessing potential opportunities and risks related to Indigenous and community relations.
Coordinate and participate in consultations, negotiations, and engagement initiatives with Indigenous communities and other stakeholders.
Identify and coordinate contracting and supplier procurement opportunities for Indigenous communities.
Stay up-to-date with relevant regulatory frameworks, policies, and best practices related to Indigenous and community relations.
Maintain awareness of national, regional and local Indigenous issues that could affect the company’s operations and growth opportunities.
Develop and deliver training programs and awareness campaigns to promote cultural competency and respect for Indigenous cultures and traditions within the organization.
Collaborate with internal teams, such as legal, operations, procurement, policy and government relations, ESG, communications, environment and regulatory, to ensure alignment and consistency in Indigenous and community relations activities and enact AltaGas’ commitments.
Monitor and report on key metrics and indicators to assess the effectiveness of Indigenous and community relations initiatives.
You have:
Bachelor's Degree in relevant field preferred
10+ Years in Indigenous and community relations, preferably in the energy or natural resources sector required
Experience working with provincial and federal regulators and regulations in western Canada required
Experience leading IBA negotiations required
Experience in project development required and experience with operational compliance preferred
Experience managing Indigenous contracting and supplier procurement opportunities required
In-depth knowledge of Indigenous cultures, histories, and rights, as well as an understanding of the unique issues and challenges faced by Indigenous communities.
Proven track record in building and maintaining positive relationships with Indigenous communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
Well respected by the communities you’ve work with.
Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and policies related to Indigenous and community relations.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage and influence diverse audiences.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic plans and initiatives.
Strong leadership skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to travel as needed to meet with stakeholders and attend relevant events or meetings.
