The GVFB provides assistance to approximately 16,000 people monthly across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore. We also provide food support to more than 139 community agencies such as housing agencies, women and children’s shelters, transition homes and after school programs, which in turn provide hot meals and snacks to thousands of people each week, including people who are unhoused.
Our mission is providing healthy food to those in need. Our vision is to create healthy communities through fair and effective food systems. Currently, the GVFB receives, purchases, and distributes 8 M lbs of food each year.
The Food Sort Assistant supervises both our corporate groups and daily, regular volunteers in all areas of Food Sort within the warehouse. They are responsible for overseeing fresh and dry food sort, and packing all Special Program bags. This role also includes outbound fulfillment areas such as our Winston Distribution and Community Agency Partners (CAPs) distribution. Utilizing our increased storage capacity and efficient food sort space, they provide an essential service to our purchased food programs.

Key Responsibilities

Manage, assign, and review work for volunteers engaged in food sort and bag packing areas;
-
Ensure FIFO (first in, first out) procedures are followed to ensure proper stock rotation;
-
Ensure sort areas are kept clean, tidy, and organized at all times;
-
Aid in the organization and accommodation of special events (i.e., open house and media visits);
-
Provide input and expertise for implementation of the fresh, dry, frozen and bag-packing programs, update annually or as directed;

Pick orders for Re-Feed allotments, CAPs, and other Distributions locations as required;

Accountable and responsible for areas including fresh and dry sort, outbound area fulfillment, and ensuring fresh food is allocated appropriately;

Post and update all CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) recalls appropriate to BC and class 1-2 recalls, excluding allergies;

Organize program and project areas making sure stock levels or needs are communicated to the Manager of Operations, warehouse and supporting staff;

Purchase and manage all supplies needed for Operations;

Use volunteer management software ‘Better Impact’ to track volunteers, and aid in promotion of engagement with the GVFB volunteer base;

Communicate daily with volunteers and staff via e-mail, Slack, phone and text message;

Conduct orientations/training for groups of up to 20 volunteers;

Flexible around work hours to include occasional evenings or weekends, as required; shifts may be subject to change.

Comfortable speaking in front of, and leading groups of up to 20 people.
Qualifications and Experience

Previous experience in customer service, and experience interacting with public;

Previous experience in warehouse environment is an asset;

Experience using industrial pallet jack is an asset;

Experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment;

Knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e., Word and Outlook).
Physical Requirements

Proper safety footwear is required;
-
Exposure to ambient temperatures and noisy conditions;

Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, lifting, walking and standing throughout shift;

Ability to bend and lift boxes on a regular basis.
