THE OPPORTUNITY
We are currently recruiting for 2 Assistant Accountants to join our Sawmill operations on Vancouver Island. One will be based out of our Saltair Sawmill, located in Ladysmith, BC, and the other will be based out of our Duke Point Sawmill, located in Nanaimo, BC.
What You’ll Do: The Assistant Accountant will provide accounting and finance support services for Western’s Saltair Sawmill or Duke Point Sawmill divisions. You’ll work closely with our Division Controller and be an integral part of the team providing accurate, concise and effective financial transaction recording and reports. This is a fantastic developmental role for someone currently enrolled in the CPA program looking to gain experience in the manufacturing industry.
Who You Are: The ideal candidate has 1-3 years’ experience in accounting roles supporting full cycle accounting and is currently enrolled in the CPA program (will consider candidates with an undergrad working on their prep courses). You are a self-starter with strong people skills who is keen to learn and grow your career; you are comfortable managing high-volume workloads and meeting tight deadlines.
Work Environment: This role is to be performed in person at either, our Saltair Sawmill located in Ladysmith, BC., or our Duke Point Sawmill located in Nanaimo, BC.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Month end journal entries and balance sheet and sub ledger reconciliations.

Weekly and monthly reporting.

Work directly with operational and finance personnel across the business.

Prepare ad hoc reports for management as needed.

Support Division Controller with tracking performance of various projects and KPIs, and optimization analysis, and;

Other duties that may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
-
Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Business, Economics and/or related area;

1-3 years of work experience in an accounting or finance department;

Experience in full cycle accounting is strongly preferred;

Enrolment in, or completion of the CPA designation program is preferred; will consider candidates working on prep courses.
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

Well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written;

Solid working knowledge of MS Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word);

Detail focused with strong organization skills;

Ability to work with tight deadlines and prioritize tasks;

Ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization; and

Demonstrates knowledge of full cycle accounting.
