The Adult Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Intensive Care unit (Psych ICU) at Alberta Hospital Edmonton provides a patient and family centered care, where all members of the teamwork within the collaborative care (CoACT) framework, according to the Addiction & Mental Health Edmonton zone Principles of Care. Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Registered Psychiatric Nurse - ICU in the Psych ICU is responsible for the rapid assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care for Psych ICU patients. Psych ICU patients pose a level of risk to themselves or others that cannot be managed in a non-Psych ICU environment, and require rapid, dynamic and therapeutic interventions. Has thorough knowledge and experience of evidence-based addiction and mental health treatment modalities (both pharmacological and nonpharmacological). Has strong verbal communication skills (English language proficiency is required) that supports verbal messages being received and understood within the context of crisis and non-crisis situations. Has demonstrated ability to practice in a recovery-oriented and trauma-informed manner.
As a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), you will provide leadership through a wide variety of nursing services to patients (clients, residents) for the purpose of promoting, maintaining or restoring health, mental health and preventing mental illness, injury and disability. You will teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and take necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care, while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited Psychiatric nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:
Working knowledge of Patient and Family Centered Care principles. Working knowledge of the DSM-5, concurrent disorders and staged matched interventions. Working knowledge of psychopathology. Demonstrated ability to assess health status (including systems examination). Demonstrated ability to independently conduct a mental status examination, conduct a mental health assessment and formulate a problem list and plan of care. Demonstrated ability to assess multiple conditions of risk and develop evidence based risk mitigation plans. Demonstrated ability to appropriately assess and manage symptoms of withdrawal from multiple substances. Demonstrated ability to engage patients and families (including but not limited to patient and family teaching). Working knowledge of all relevant legislation (e.g. MH Act, HIA, PPIC, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates who: Have at least 2 years recent experience working with persons with an Addiction and/or Mental Health issue – preferably in a hospital setting. Equivalencies may be considered. Working knowledge regarding the use of psychotropic medication (advanced knowledge preferred). Core nonviolent crisis intervention skills (advanced skills preferred).
