This is an exciting opportunity to join the Division of Nephrology at University Health Network. The Nephrology Service is committed to best practice and developing innovative and evidenced based approach to patients with kidney disease, with a strong academic focus including trainees who rotate throughout medicine subspecialties, and fellowship programs focusing on general and advanced training in Nephrology.
SUMMARY:
The Nephrology Service consists of the outpatient in-centre hemodialysis program at Toronto General, which provides dialysis to over 300 patients split over and alternating day schedule. Inpatient nephrology spans across all sites at UHN including TG, TW, PMH, Toronto Rehab, and Sinai. This includes an inpatient Nephrology Unit at TG, Peritoneal Dialysis, Home Dialysis, Chronic Kidney Disease Clinics, Satellite hemodialysis units at Sheppard & Sussex.
The Physician Assistant (PA) will be part of the Nephrology team. Working under the direction of the supervising Nephrologist, and in accordance with the delegated medical act, the principal responsibilities of the PA include utilizing and demonstrating a knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence to care for Nephrology patients in the inpatient and/or outpatient setting. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: conducting patient interviews and taking medical histories; performing physical examinations; ordering and interpreting tests; diagnosing and treating illness; performing therapeutic or diagnostic procedures; providing medical orders and prescriptions; and counseling on preventative health care. Clinical areas will include inpatient consultative service, ambulatory dialysis services and nephrology clinics. The PA will have the opportunity to develop expertise in the management of patients with chronic kidney disease, in addition to patients on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, including the opportunity to become skilled in central venous catheter insertion and removal. Our division has a dedicated training program to on board the successful candidate. The PA will work with the supervisor to ensure that all aspects of the care provided are clinically indicated and in keeping with best practice guidelines. Throughout their careers, PAs also take part in quality improvement initiatives, policy development, education, research, health advocacy, professional development, and leadership opportunities.
The PA will function as a vital part of this collaborative team of Physicians, Surgeons, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Fellows and Allied Health Professionals providing care to Nephrology patients in a physician-extender role. Their role will include, but will not be limited to, comprehensive inpatient medical management of nephrology patients, including assisting with patient admissions and discharges. The PA will be joining a team that focuses on continuous improvement, and understands the importance of education and training in each member of the team. The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities and will be expected to develop their potential as a leader and teacher in the Nephrology Service. There is also potential for involvement in many of the research activities.
Successful individual will be required to work 8-to-12-hour shifts (days & evenings) weekdays +/- weekends. (total 37.5 hours per week)
REQUIREMENTS:

At minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree in an accredited Physician Assistant program or recognized equivalent

Must be a Canadian Certified Physician Assistant (CCPA) and/or a American Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C)

Must be a current member of the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA) or a current member of the American Association of Physician Associates (AAPA)

Maintain certification and CCPA/PA-C designation by completing the required CPD/CME credits

Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines

Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
