Job Title: Property Tax Manager
Reports To: Assistant Director, Property Tax
Department: Property Tax
Responsibilities:
The specific duties and responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Complete valuations of Trust owned and managed properties and compare with valuations established by the appropriate Assessment Division;
- Negotiate equitable settlements with provincial assessment officials;
- File appeals, prepare valuation reports, and appear before Assessment Review Boards and higher tribunals;
- Monitor, analyze the relevant real property legislation and regulations within the various statutes and be proactive in its interpretation and its impact, and be instrumental in applying to tenant recoveries;
- Identify and quantify errors in municipal tax billings;
- Make/approve applications for tax adjustments related to errors in tax bills, vacant space, property class, in compliance with the appropriate legislative requirements;
- Work with consultants and legal service suppliers, in conjunction with Senior Manager
- Maintain relations with the industry groups, professional associations, and government assessment officials to ensure that the Trust’s views and interests are presented and protected
- Act as a consultant to other departments on matters pertaining to property valuation and taxation for the purpose of tax estimates, budgets, cash flow management, and allocation of taxes to tenants in accordance with the lease agreements and current legislation such as:
1. Provide reasonable tax estimates to leasing within 24 hours
2. Provide tax budgets and cash flows within deadlines
3. Review and approve tenant tax recovery files within deadlines
- Provide consulting services to Accounting and A/R with respect to tenant tax disputes.
Academic/Professional Requirements:
- Paralegal designation from the Law Society of Upper Canada is preferred
- Designations in one or more of the following: AACI, AIMA, MIMA, MRICS
Required Skills/Experience:
- Minimum five years experience in Property Assessment and Tax as applied to real estate development, property management, budgeting and real property assessment and tax legislation and regulations;
- Excellent knowledge and experience related to the appropriate use of technology and information systems in a real estate development and property management environment;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate across all levels within the organization;
- Strong organization skills, with excellent technical, research and analytical skills;
- Current knowledge of real property assessment and tax legislation and regulations;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills;

- Capacity to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
