SUMMARY:
The Engineer supports HOYA operations for Canada by performing installations, process optimisation, planning utilization of facilities equipment, materials, and staff to improve efficiencies of operations, improve quality yields, and reduce operating costs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Leads assigned engineering projects that include planning, coordination, and implementation of projects. This includes working within time constraints to meet operational goals.
- Hands on operating machines/ trouble shooting and first level support for technical issues on machines. Supports lab with equipment and processes to solve issues in a timely manner.
- Validation of new Machinery and processes for workflow improvements
- Make improvements of machine parameter settings for process time and quality.
- Works continuously to reduce spoilage in the manufacturing process. Also works on lab floor to operate equipment as needed and find efficiencies.
- Prepares detailed procedures for the different processes and maintenance of equipment and verify procedures are followed.
- Evaluate current manufacturing practices and identify those needing improvement with continuous Improvements actions
- Conducts accurate time studies to determine labor requirements, establish work measurement programs, and analyze work samples to develop standards for labor utilization.
- Recommends methods for improving worker efficiency, reducing waste of materials, and utilities such as restructuring job duties, reorganizing workflow, relocating workstations and equipment, and purchase of equipment.
- Confers with management and staff to implement plans and recommendations
- Develops management systems for cost analysis, financial planning, wage and salary administration, and job evaluation.
- Coordinates and oversee equipment installation and lab redesign. Prepares layouts, coordinates with management schedules for installation of equipment and utilities, and verifies installation is executed successfully and on time.
- Plans and supports installation of new products successfully into HOYA or partner labs.
- Uses DOE techniques to test processes and consumables. Uses statistical tools to present results and support recommendations.
- Creates and provides reporting for Local, Regional and Global HQs.
- Visits facilities for possible acquisition to assess equipment and determine overall condition of lab operations.
- Assists with Free Form installation to distributor labs and helps to provide support.
- Follows all HOYA policies, SOPs, and safety regulations. Any infractions are reported accordingly.
- Assists with other tasks as required.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial engineering or similar Engineering field is required
- A total of 1-2 years of previous work experience within a manufacturing environment, preferably within an optical manufacturing environment.
- Course work or experience working with PLCs, electronic controllers, or automated equipment in a manufacturing environment.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
- Computer literate (intermediate MS Office Suite skills: with focus on MS Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Thorough technical knowledge of Optical principles and lab processes, equipment and maintenance
- Strong basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Knowledge of LSS, Kaizen principles,5S, is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE FOLLOWING AREAS:
- Hands on experience and working with mechanical components and machine operations, Ability to fix mechanical issues and troubleshooting is a must.
- Raw materials, hazardous chemicals, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
- Business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources, leadership techniques, production methods and coordination of people and resources.
- Machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
- Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
Physical Demands of Working Environment:
Environmental: Laboratory and office environment, working with water, caustic and acidic chemicals and exposed to hazardous chemicals. Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Occasional dusty air with flying particulates.
Physical: sufficient Physical ability necessary for sitting and standing for extended periods of time. The ability to occasionally Climb, Kneel, Lift, Pull, Reach, Push, Carry and Twist. Must be able to use hands to Grasp and manipulate small objects. Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 20 LBS and on occasion up to 100 LBS.
Vision: Must be able to see in the normal vision range with or without correction; Vision sufficient to read computer screens, printed documents, job tickets, faxes, cosmetic defects, procedural and policy documents.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
