BIOVECTRA Inc. is a leading bio-science business in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, focused on contract manufacturing and product development of active pharmaceutical ingredients, pharmaceutical intermediates, and bioreagents.
BIOVECTRA Inc. has an opening for a Senior Scientist, Process Development. This is a permanent, full-time position located in Dartmouth, NS.
The candidate will be responsible for:
- Transferring of existing processes for biologics from clients to BIOVECTRA.
- Developing and optimization of Phase 1 – 3 production processes at lab scale.
- Developing and optimizing the fermentation (upstream) and midstream processes for biologics products.
- Developing downstream isolation and purification processes for biologics.
- Designing experimental development approaches, process characterization, scale up and technology transfer to GMP manufacturing.
- Supporting the TechOps and the Manufacturing teams by participating in identifying problems in pilot and commercial production runs as required and troubleshooting by designing scale-down models and implementing process improvements.
- Carrying out literature searches as appropriate to currently known methods, designing new approaches as required, and preparing research plans.
- Overseeing project onboarding by interacting with clients and project managers, developing experimental plans, and ordering of materials and consumables.
- Writing experimental protocols, work instructions, and scientific progress reports.
- Coordinating execution of experimental runs by supervising the assigned team of scientists and technicians.
- Preparing slideshows and presenting experimental results to the client’s technical team.
- Assisting the departmental manager ensuring the workplace is clean, staff is adequately trained, and equipment is well maintained.
- Training and supervising scientists, technicians, or summer students if needed.
- Complying with approved safety practices for the laboratory and manufacturing facilities.
- Adhering to BIOVECTRA’s Health and Safety Policy as outlined in CP0010 Occupational Health and Safety Policy, Statements of Principle, and Responsibilities.
- Additional Duties assigned, based on business needs and the department supervisor’s request.
The successful candidate for this position should have:
- M.Sc. in microbiology, biotechnology, molecular biology, or biochemistry with 3 – 5 years of industrial experience in biologics production.
- Alternatively, PhD in one of the above-mentioned fields with 1 – 2 years of relevant experience. A B.Sc. with at least 5 – 7 years of relevant industrial experience would be considered.
- Strong working knowledge of microbial fermentation for biologics production and purification.
- Previous experience in running project, team supervision, and interacting with clients are strong assets.
- Experience with computer software including Microsoft Word, spreadsheets, and the ability to conduct online database searches.
- Experience in bio-statistical methods such as DoE, evaluation of significance & variability, process modelling and use of bio-stats software such as Design Expert or JMP would be a considerable asset.
