General Accountability
Purpose and Scope
Reporting to the Recreation and Culture Program Supervisor and taking direction from the Program
Coordinator and/or a Recreation Programmer and the Pool Team Lead, the Head Lifeguard assists with
program delivery and maintenance and operations at the Centennial Outdoor Pool.
Nature and Scope of Work
- Maintain constant supervision of pool environment (water and surrounding area) to ensure that it is
safe, including all participants, equipment and facilities.
- Respond to emergency situations as a single lifeguard or as a member of a lifeguard team.
- Observe and work within the necessary Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Assist the Pool Supervisor with staff training, supervision, scheduling, and evaluations; maintaining pool
records and statistics; report writing.
- Based on the program curriculums in the BC & Yukon Branch of the Lifesaving Society, design, modify
and instruct safe, effective and appropriate swimming and water safety programs to meet the needs of
apparently healthy individuals or special populations in a group aquatic setting.
- Work cooperatively and respectfully with supervisor(s), the lifeguard team, user groups and other
program staff to ensure the delivery of quality swimming and water safety programming.
- Assist with program delivery (swimming lessons, aquatic courses/camps, school visits, etc.) and
activities.
- Incorporate the use of appropriate equipment based on specialized training and the needs of
participants.
- Monitor and maintain water treatment systems, including pool chemicals, to provide a safe and
comfortable bather environment.
- Comply with standards and guidelines as required for facility maintenance and cleaning.
- Participate in meetings and training sessions as required.
- Process cash transactions.
- Provide back up to the Pool Team Lead position.
- Other duties as required.
Necessary Qualifications
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of injury prevention, inclusion and progressive learning in a group aquatic setting.
- Knowledge of appropriate rescue techniques and effective management of victim types such as a
distressed swimmer, drowning non-swimmer, submerged non-breathing victim and a victim with a
suspected spinal injury.
- Knowledge of aquatic chemicals and equipment, and the proper and safe utilization thereof.
