The Streetworks RN engages with individuals referred to the community centre and participates in field work/outreach to address the healthcare needs of individuals living in poverty. The RN identifies and assesses the person’s needs while monitoring and formulating a medical report.
This role of the Streetworks RN includes providing comprehensive physical and mental health assessments, delivery of harm reduction supplies, supervised consumption clinical interventions and education, take home naloxone distribution, sexual health and other health education and support, and referrals to other health & social services. Other duties may include distribution of safer sex and drug use supplies, and basic wound care

Position Responsibilities

Using a harm reduction approach, provides education and counselling on overdose prevention, safer injection techniques, substance use, sexual health and other high-risk behaviors.

Takes the leadership role in assisting management with policy development, research and evaluation, and quality improvement, as required.

Completes pre-injection, post-injection assessments and monitors individuals’ health for the duration of the SCS visit, assisting other SCS staff with assessment and documentation standards as required, for all operational activities.

Initiates and directs overdose and other emergency responses for all SCS staff when necessary (e.g. naloxone, oxygen, ventilation, CPR), as per established protocols.

Engage in overall assistance and care of individuals living in poverty. This includes fostering an empathetic, non-judgemental environment

Monitor patient progress and create accurate reports

Works collaboratively with individuals, health care professionals and community services in the identification and resolution of health issues and integration of care, making referrals to other service providers as appropriate.

Maintains standards of nursing practice and develops professional competence through training and educational opportunities, as required by the employer and regulatory body.

With the support of other team members, ensures that every individual involved in activities with illicit substances complies with the exemption requirements, in accordance with Health Canada’s terms and conditions.

BSCS is more than a workplace. It is a community where everyone helps and contributes to the whole, and there is an expectation that all employees will take part in events (during the work week and occasionally during weekends and evenings). This includes fundraising campaigns, running community meals, medicine picking etc.
Qualifications

Post-Secondary Education and Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and current registration with CARNA

Police Check with the Vulnerable Sector and Child and Youth Intervention Check completed within the past six months

Valid First Aid certificate or enrolled in a future course
