Under the supervision of the Manager of Mechanical Engineering, the Industrial Automation Engineer is responsible for the design, development, commissioning of automated manufacturing equipment, diagnosing and troubleshooting issues, developing and implementing process improvements, and collaborating with R&D Engineers. The Industrial Automation Engineer will also provide testing support for equipment verifications and validations and continuous improvement projects.
The Industrial Automation Engineer’s contributions will be multidisciplinary: mechanical/ mechatronic (hardware), as well as software related.
The successful candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, possess excellent problem-solving skills, employs a systematic approach to process improvement, and rigorously documents their work.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead design and development of new, on-site automated and semi-automated industrial manufacturing equipment
- Conceptual design using design for excellence principals, prototyping, testing, iteration, verification, validation and ongoing product/process improvements
- Ensure that equipment is safe to operate
- Creation and modification of 3D part and assembly models, and 2D drawings
- Creation and modification of software to support operation of production equipment
- Creation and modification of system schematics and network structures
- Interpret technical engineering documents (technical drawings, system specification documents, software requirements & conventions, and operational procedures)
- Rigorous documentation of functional, operational and maintenance procedures as well as mechanical design packages and software base
- Lead process development projects using statistically sound methodologies
- Lead ongoing product/process improvement projects
- Lead investigations to identify root causes of equipment/ process deficiencies and technical problems. Propose and implement corrective actions
- Design and execute experiments to verify and validate improvements to production equipment/ processes
- Provide technical guidance to Jr. Automation Engineers
- Generate documentation in support of regulatory submissions
- Work within a fast-paced team environment and coordinate work with other project disciplines
- Work independently and make technical decisions based on robust data

Skills & Qualifications (Education and Experience)
- Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, mechatronics engineering, software engineering or similar, or equivalent work experience
- 5+ years of relevant experience preferred, experience within medical device industry viewed favourably
- Automation equipment design experience preferred (machinery, part handling techniques, robotics, conveyors, sensors, tools, and fixtures)
- Experience integrating mechanical designs with electrical hardware and controls software systems
- Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Able to understand complex systems quickly and correctly
- Eagerness for hands-on, practical work
- Experienced designing in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Experience developing software using C++, Python, BASH
- Experience with both Windows and Linux-based operating systems, computer networking, TCP/IP, UDP considered an asset
- Experience with computer vision systems, digital sensors, microcontrollers considered an asset
- Experience using GitHub or similar in a collaborative environment considered an asset
- Skill in data processing, mathematical modelling and statistical analysis
- Skill in mechanical, electrical, and software diagnosis tools and processes
- Skill in mechanical assembly using hand tools, power tools, soldering and other techniques
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively with multidisciplinary team

Salary: $50,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
