THE OPPORTUNITY
Western Forest Products is currently recruiting for a Senior Silviculture Field Planner/Forester to be based out of our Stillwater Forest Operation in Powell River, BC.
What You’ll Do: Under the supervision of the TFL Forester, the Senior Silviculture Field Planner/Forester plays a key role in forest management, primarily responsible for field activities related to silviculture programs, both in their planning pre-harvest and their implementation post-harvest. The role may also include the support and coordination of certification programs and operations/engineering functions as needed within the designated TFL or Forest Operation.
Who You Are: You have 2-3 years’ experience in silviculture related activities with strong knowledge in silviculture and forest harvesting practices, with a focus on improving safety, quality and efficiency. You are a self-motivated individual with a strong sense of initiative and proven ability to work in a team environment with superior communication skills. An RPF designation is preferred, but we are open to someone with their RFT designation as well.
Work Environment: This role is to be performed in person at out Stillwater Forest Operations in Powell River, BC. Relocation assistance may be available.
About WFP's Forestry Team: WFP demonstrates an industry leading forest management strategy with a focus on silviculture, climate change, carbon management, biodiversity, public engagement, water and much more. Our Timberlands Operations are located on the Sunshine Coast in Powell River as well as throughout the north and west portions of beautiful Vancouver Island. We have more than 100 Forest Professionals sustainably delivering timber from our 6 area based Tree Farm Licenses and 10 volume based tenures to the 8 manufacturing facilities WFP owns and operates on Vancouver Island.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide leadership in safety and environmental stewardship by demonstrating and ensuring the adherence of company safety and sustainability processes and procedures. This includes support of the EMS, CSA and/or SFI certification systems.
- Support the delivery of annual silviculture programs on budget for the designated TFL or Forest Operation;
- Recommend effective and innovative strategies to deliver programs cost effectively.
- Provide leadership and direction to improve contractor and staff safety, sustainably reduce treatment unit costs, and maximize future stand value and margins;
- Responsible for layout, field supervision and quality control of silvicultural activities including but not limited to site preparation/fire hazard abatement, planting, fertilization, seedling protection, vegetation management, survey and rehabilitation projects and ensure compliance with various Operational Plans and Company Policies;
- Completion of record keeping that documents field surveys and forward planning activities;
- Prepare prescriptions for planned silviculture treatments;
- Support Silviculture Forester in scheduling and managing short term tactical plans for silviculture projects and to ensure delivery of projects within budgets;
- Assist Silviculture Forester in development of innovative silviculture strategies to improve stand resilience and reduce costs associated with meeting reforestation obligations;
- Prepare various plans and assessments associated with cutblock development including:
Site Plans, Harvest, Road, Silviculture and Deactivation Instructions, Cutting Permit Submissions, Road Permit Submissions and related engineering projects, and preparation of other applications as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- 2-3 years of experience in silviculture related activities with increasingly responsible roles;
- Post-secondary Degree or Diploma in Forestry or related degree in Natural Resource Management;
- Current accreditation with the Association of BC Forest Professionals; RPF is preferred but we are open to RFT as well.
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies
- Good understanding and comprehension of Forest Management;
- Good understanding and comprehension of statistics and principles of data analysis;
- Good understanding of BC Government RESULTS database and basic understanding of preparing RESULTS submissions;
- Proven ability to work in a team environment and possess good communication skills;
- Good working knowledge of legal regulations and requirements related to BC crown and private land forest operations;
- Experience with forestry software (Land Resource Manager (LRM), Survey Wizard, Plant Wizard) as well as technology (i.e. LiDAR) would be considered an asset.
